Funeral services for Rev. William Aubrey Matthews will be on Sunday, September 29, 2019, at Brookhaven Funeral Home (894 Natchez Drive) in Brookhaven, MS, at 4:00 PM. The graveside service will be on Monday, September 30, 2019, at 11:00 AM in the Jones Chapel Church of God Cemetery (5880 HWY 145) in Meridian, MS. Bro. Nick Hodges will be officiating the services with Brookhaven Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be at Brookhaven Funeral Home on Sunday, from 2:00 PM until the time of service at 4:00 PM.
Rev. Matthews, 90, of Brookhaven, MS, passed from this life on Friday, September 27, 2019, at Plainview Assisted Living in Richland, MS. He was born on January 17, 1929, in Neshoba County, MS, to T. O. and Lois Germany Matthews. He was a member of Union Hall Baptist Church; served his country in the US Army; worked in education for many years and then served as a minister at First Church of God in Brookhaven, MS; was an active member of the Brookhaven American Legion; and was an active member of the Brookhaven Retired Teachers Association and enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.
Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Cathryn Hood Matthews; son, Bruce Albert Matthews; and brother, Samuel A. Matthews.
Survivors are his daughter, Esther Matthews Way and husband Eddie of Richland, MS; grandchildren, Rachel Lynch (Bryan) and Rebekah Nelson (Trace); great-grandchildren, Levi Lynch, Laura Kendall Lynch, and Nate Nelson; and a host of family and friends.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Plainview Assisted Living and to the staff of Heart of Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Rev. Matthews' name to Union Hall Baptist Church Mission Fund (Brookhaven, MS) and/or Crossroads of Life Church of God Mission Fund (Byram, MS).
