Vera Abrams Davis' Obituary
Vera Abrams Davis, 104 years old, a longtime resident of Jackson passed away Sunday, February 11, 2018, in Panama City, Florida, where she had resided for the past seven years at Mathison Retirement Center. She had moved to be closer to her family. Vera was a member of the Beth Israel Congregation in Jackson.
Born in Brookhaven, Mississippi, to Israel Abrams and Fannie Cohn Abrams on May 24, 1913, she moved to Jackson in 1935 and went to work for the United States Forestry Service. It was in Jackson where she met her future husband, George Hubert Davis, a member of the United States Army and the Mississippi National Guard. In spite of his military service, the family never moved from Jackson and resided in the Meadowbrook area.
Vera was preceded in death by her husband, Col. George Hubert Davis, as well as her beloved siblings, Roselyn Schlesinger, Florine Abrams, Cliff Abrams, all from Brookhaven and Evelyn Cline of Jackson.
She is survived by her daughter, Fay Davis Dever (Jim) of Lynn Haven, Florida, a 1962 graduate of Murrah high school, her three grandchildren, Mitch Dever (Sarah) of Panama City, Florida, Melanie Ray (Pat) of Marietta, Georgia, and Melinda Walker (Jason) of Lynn Haven, Florida, eight great-grandchildren, two nieces, Shirley Gurwitch (Maury), formally of Hattiesburg, MS, Sylvia Talley (Doug) of Marietta, GA, one nephew, Charles Abrams of Atlanta, GA, and several great nieces and nephews. In addition to family members, two of her very special friends in Jackson were Ms. Bea Gavant and Ms. Emily Thost.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, February 16, 2018, at 2:00 PM in the Rose Hill Cemetery on E. Monticello Street in Brookhaven, Mississippi, with Rabbi Matt Dreffin presiding and Brookhaven Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Beth Israel Congregation, 5315 Old Canton Road, Jackson, MS 39211.
