Obituary

Mrs. Katie Mae Brinston Sanders, 84 years old, of Pattison, MS passed away on Sunday, July 10, 2022 at Silver Cross Health and Rehab Center in Brookhaven, MS. The following conditions were identified as determining causes of her decline and immobility ultimately resulting in her death: osteoporosis, stage 4 metastatic bone cancer, detached bones, spinal tears, hypertension, angina, and vitamin D and potassium deficiencies.

Mrs. Katie Mae Brinston Sanders was born on June 01, 1938 to parents Mr. Walter Lee Brinston and Mrs. Ludie Bell Shorts of Copiah County, MS. At age 8, she became a family cook and caregiver of her aunt who later passed away of cancer. Her early exposure to working in the cotton fields ended her formal education in the 8 th grade. At age 16, she married Mr. James Henry Sanders Sr. and bore 5 children. Later, she began working in education with kindergarten students. She even assisted her son and husband in cutting and hauling pulp wood in summer months. In the factories, she worked at National Plastics and United Paper Tube Inc. in Port Gibson, MS. She also worked at Pattison Fire Station as a janitor for the nutrition program for the elderly.

Mrs. Katie Mae Brinston Sanders was a previous member of Little Zion United Methodist Church in Copiah County.

Her hobbies were quilting, sewing, fishing, planting fruit trees, lawn care, and preparing food and gifts for holiday gatherings. She used rainwater as an irrigation system to treat her hair and gardens. She also loved spending time with family and caring for animals. She retired from cooking at age 74.

Preceding Mrs. Katie Mae Brinston Sanders in death was her husband Mr. James Henry Sanders Sr., father Mr. Walter Lee Brinston and mother Ludie Bell Shorts- Jackson, brothers Mr. Willie T. Jackson and Mr. Charles Brinston of Marrero, LA , sister Ms. Carrie Lee Brinston of Pattison, MS, daughter Mrs. Betty Jean White of Long Beach, CA, and son Mr. Nelson Sanders of Hazlehurst, MS.

She is survived by daughter Ms. Velma Sanders of Pattison, MS, sons SFC Tuskie Sanders (retired) of Alabaster, AL and Mr. James Edward Sanders of Hazlehurst, MS, three sisters Mrs. Annie Lee Owens of Jackson, MS, Mrs. Margaree Adams of Brookhaven, MS, and Mrs. Mary Brown of Pattison, MS, and a host grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other family and friends.

Celebration of life for Mrs. Katie Mae Brinston Sanders will start on Saturday, July 16, 2022 with the Wake at 10:00am followed by Funeral Services at 11:00am at Brookhaven Funeral Home at 894 Natchez Dr NE – Brookhaven, MS. Burial will take place at Hillcrest Cemetery in Brookhaven, MS.
