Rev. John Decatur Smith, 88, passed from this life on January 7, 2016, at his home in Brookhaven, MS. Rev. Smith was born on September 16, 1927, in Lucien, MS, to Thomas I. (Sr.) and Fanny Cupit Smith.
Private family graveside service will be on Tuesday, January 12, 2016, at 11 AM at Little Bahalia Baptist Church Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church of Brookhaven at 2 PM on Tuesday, January 12, 2016. Bro. John Brock will be officiating the services. Brookhaven Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Rev. Smith was a member of First Baptist Church of Brookhaven. He served as a missionary for the International Mission Board in Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, Australia and Norway for more than 30 years. He loved to visit with people and to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with them. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas I. (Sr.) and Fanny Cupit Smith; 2 sisters; and 5 brothers.
Survivors are his wife of 63 years, Nell Brock Smith; daughter, Abigail Smith May and her husband Russell of Jacksonville Beach, FL; grandchildren, Rusty May, Christy May Podstawa and husband Michael, and John May; great grandchildren, Emily and Sarah May, and Joseph and Allie Podstawa; and a host of nieces and nephews.
